Malaysia encounters its biggest and worst flood ever since 2007!
It is obvious that 2013 has not been very kind to all Malaysians. We all have equally experience the ups and downs as we progressed from early of the year towards the end of the year. Starting from the dramatic 13th general election, to the hike of petrol price, implementation of 6% GST, removal of sugar subsidization, implementation of new fishing net rule which causes 60-70% loss in trawler/fishing industry, ban in bird nest export, 100-400% hike in assessment tax followed by the increment of electric tariff (20.9% in east coast and 22.9% in Sabah – inclusive of 6% GST) and yet still a long list of hail of abuse from the government awaiting to be announced and exercised. With all these life burdens, we are still being struck with very little outward signs of love and kindness as a merciless flood has struck the west of East Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) affecting at least 34,000 Malaysians who are now forced to be evacuated!
With the heavy downpour from the annual north-east monsoon falling continuously since Sunday (1st December 2013), a massive flood began to hit multiple states which mainly affected Kelantan, Kuantan (Pahang), Johor and Terengganu. Amid concern on the conditions of the affected states, I am trying to gather as much information as possible and summarize them accordingly.
Pahang is unanimously the most adversely affected state with some of its peripheral regions such as Kuantan and Rompin are heavily inundated by flood water of at least one meter. Residents especially from the low lying areas were forced to be evacuated and sheltered in the relief centers. Since the water level has continuously arise alarmingly despite the abate of downpour, TNB was forced to cut off the electricity supply to over 1000 flooded power stations which has affected not only 63000 consumers but also interrupted the water pumps of Syarikat Air Terengganu. This has resulted temporary shortage of electricity and water supplies in certain districts of Pahang. With the addition of interruption in major telecommunication services, most of the premises of commercial enterprises and financial institutions were forced to shut down, roads were impassable, the towns were totally paralyzed with shortage of aid convey and basic necessities such as food and water. Residents were left with nothing but panic, havoc and grief.
It was also reported that two bodies, belonging to a man and his 17 years old son were recovered in Kuantan, both of whom were drowned.
The irony is that according to The New Strait Times, state secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail had announced on the Nov 2013 that the state government was ready for the end year monsoon and flood. Numerous evacuation centers had been identified with a vast number of helpers, agencies and departments standby; with the first day of flood in Kuantan alone had caused utter chaos and help was no way to be seen. Sadly but as expected, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob reportedly had admitted the flaw in the “system” on 4th December 2013, blaming that the lack of food was a result of the auditor’s report who claimed the food in the Welfare department had been stocked excessively.
The situation in Terengganu worsen on 4th December 2013 as the rain had shown no signs of subside. Although it was reported that the rain had finally stopped and the numbers of evacuees had dropped from 7780 to 6750, however, the situation remains much the same and the level of water remains at the danger point. Kemaman is still severely affected but the number of evacuees dropped from 3,840 to 3,078. In addition, it was also reported that the first drowning case happens in Kampung Padang Kubu, Kijal, Terengganu where a 17 years old boy was said to have drown and found dead in the flood at Sungai Pelantoh and a child was also reported missing earlier. Adding to the fatality is a 21 years old man who was also found drown and death on Wednesday.
There were also 232 power stations being cut off which causes no electricity supply to 10000 residents. Many roads are also seen collapsed.
Despite that the flood water in most areas of Johor has finally receded and most of the evacuees were allowed to return home, there is still 23 shelters and relief centers remain operates to shelter approximately 400 victims from this disastrous flood.
At its peak, 7500 Johor residents were forced to be evacuated from their residences. Mersing was the worst struck district in Johor. About 4800 families were badly affected by the intermittent rain pour but thankfully, no casualties have been reported.
Kelantan becomes the fourth state to be hit by the massive flood. On Wednesday, 25000 residents were forced to leave their homes in Kelantan and the flood had affected six districts in Kelantan mainly Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Machang, Pasir Putih, Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah. All the major rivers in Kelantan were said to had breached the danger points. However, no accidents and casualties have been reported.
These are the news that I am able to retrieve, collect and summarize from various local reliable news agencies such as The China Press, The New Straits Times, Bernama News and etc in combination with the updates from the social networks.
I would like to send my condolences to the victims who had drowned in this massive flood, also to express my deepest sympathy to all the residents!
Being the usual skeptical and criticism of myself, I would really like to pinpoint the disappointment.. the HUGE disappointment that I have towards our government. HOW CAN A GOVERNMENT, BEING SO MISERABLE,ARROGANT AND IMPRUDENT THAT IT FAILS TO IMPRESS HIS PEOPLES AND GAIN THEIR TRUST AT ALL TIME!
All the flood relief efforts were noticeable delayed and ineffective, especially the state government of Pahang that has proves to be a joke of himself! The annual monsoon rain is expected every year and massive flash flood occurs every year! However, the rescue and preparation works are totally shocking tales of doom and gloom!
The Kelantan Umno liason deputy chairman Awang Adek had publicly criticized the inefficiency of PAS as the state government of Kelantan, claiming that “the problem could be overcome if the people gave Barisan Nasional the chance to rule Kelantan through the upcoming general election…the Kelantan Pas government was incapable of solving the flood problems even after 23 years of ruling the state as it was not on the same wavelength and did not have good relations with the Federal Government” – quoted from http://www.nst.com.my/nation/general/floods-in-kelantan-terengganu-worsen-1.225864. [Correspond to his accusation, I would like to ask: My dear chairman, I am extremely baffled by your statement that are you indeed hinting that the federal government refuses to assist Kelantan government because they are of different party? So, due to that, the federal government will and should “abandon” the residents of Kelantan and halted all the development projects in Kelantan? Despite the fact that BN has ruled Malaysia for 56 years, we have clearly see, feel and experience the country regression, how would you say about that?]
However, Kelantan is of the lease affected and fastest recovered states among the four! Look at Pahang! Even with the “massive” and “well” preparation as claimed on the preceding month, the towns were desperate with worries and chaos even on the first day of the flood itself!
What most frustrating is that proper flood relief efforts only began after few days of the incidents! While the rain and flood worsen each day, all the major people were busy attending the Umno Annual GRAND Assembly. They were pretty much occupied by their own “syok sendiri” speech..especially the Penang Umno Chief, Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, who was so busy urging the assembly to dump the “1Malaysia” slogan and change it to “1Melayu” since all the Chinese were not grateful towards the government by not electing BN during the last 13th GE! People, you should really wake up! The fact that it is not just only Chinese or non-muslims had “abandon” you but is the majority of us! You have even fail to secure the majority votes! The fact is that we live in a democratic country where the citizens are given the rights to vote and speak! You fail us miserably so we voted you out, that is our choice and this IS the rule of thumb of the game! Is our freedom! But why would the government now consistently “thanking” the “muslims”/”malays” for supporting and otherwise pushing again and again, trying to outcast and punish your nonsupporters!? Isn’t it you should be sitting here now thinking what have you done that resulted such dramatic lost, my dear Najib and all Umno members!? You promoted 1Malaysia in effort for nation unity but you ARE the one who leads your people to publicly criticize non-muslims and on and on with your “gratitude theory”! Is your greediness, corruption and autocracy that make us dislike you! And by mean of “us”, I am referring to Malaysians! Not just speaking as a Chinese or a nonmuslim! When your citizens are in despair and truly in need of your help, all of you were so busy entertaining among yourself and enjoying the warmth and comfort instead of assisting. After that, only apologize for the delay of aid convey followed by appearance in tvs, medias, photo-capturing your moment of sympathetic and compassionate. I think it is such a huge disgrace and disgust especially when the government was readily assist the Philippines government in the relief operations after the occurrence of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) but fail to rescue your own people!
Should you, the federal government has the compassion, urgency and responsibility, the relevant departments , operations and missions would have been long prepared and equally assist to all affected states, irregardless of who dominates the state government!
I am sorry if my opinion have offended anyone. It is not I am in favor of any particular party. I am just only speaking the truth of the entire picture here. I really hope that the federal government will really, truly fulfill your responsibilities. If you are able to show your efficiency and capabilities, no one will have judge you such a way.
Anyway, I would really like to express my utmost respect to all units who have standby and readily to extend their help; whether they are from government bodies, private institutions or volunteering bodies. Yet they have spent their time and effort in helping the needies regardless of races, gender and etc.
It is 1:15 am of 7th December 2013, the sound of pouring sound is once heard.. Praying to all the friends and residents of the East Malaysia….
